Some people open this page because something has shifted — the fun has faded and the habit has taken over. If that is where you are, you are in the right place. Rizk provides a full set of account controls, and there are trained organisations in the UK ready to help right now.

Why responsible gambling matters

Gambling works best as entertainment — a way to spend an evening, not a way to manage stress or make ends meet. The moment it stops feeling like a choice and starts feeling like a need, the risk of harm rises quickly. Recognising that shift early is the most useful thing anyone can do.

The tools and organisations below exist for exactly that moment. They are not a last resort: using a deposit limit from day one, for instance, is just good money management.

Signs gambling is getting out of hand

Problem gambling rarely arrives all at once. Watch for these patterns:

  • Chasing losses — returning to win back money already lost
  • Spending more than you planned, or gambling with money set aside for bills or rent
  • Hiding the amount you gamble from people close to you
  • Feeling anxious, irritable or low when you are not gambling
  • Borrowing money or selling things to fund play
  • Gambling to escape problems rather than for enjoyment

One or two of these on a single occasion does not mean a crisis. A recurring pattern does.

Questions worth asking yourself

These questions are not a diagnosis — they are a prompt to pause. Answer honestly, even if nobody else sees the answers.

  1. Have I spent more than I intended in the last month?
  2. Have I gambled to try to win back money I lost?
  3. Have I lied to family or friends about how much I gamble?
  4. Has gambling made me feel guilty or ashamed?
  5. Have I considered gambling a way to solve a financial problem?
  6. Have I missed work, study or a social commitment because of gambling?
  7. Have I borrowed money specifically to gamble with?
  8. Have I tried to cut back and found it difficult?

Three or more "yes" answers is a signal worth acting on. The helplines below are free, confidential and staffed by people who have heard it all before.

Rizk's control tools

Every tool below is available inside your account settings. None of them requires a phone call — you can apply them yourself, immediately.

Deposit and spending limits

Deposit limits cap how much you can add to your account on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. A reduction takes effect immediately; an increase goes through a short cooling-off period so an impulsive decision cannot undo a sensible one overnight. Setting a weekly limit at the start of the month is the single most effective way to keep gambling inside a budget you have already decided on.

Session and time controls

A Reality Check appears on screen at intervals you choose, reminding you how long you have been playing and giving you the option to close the session. A Session Time Limit goes further: when the timer runs out, you are logged out automatically rather than prompted. Session limits can be set on a daily, weekly or monthly basis.

Time Out and self-exclusion

A Time Out locks your account for 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days — a short, recoverable break that does not require any explanation. Self-exclusion closes your account for a fixed period (minimum 24 hours, with a cool-off before it can be shortened) or permanently (with a 7-day cool-off before removal). A permanent self-exclusion is not a step to take lightly, but it is there and it works.

If you self-exclude with us, we strongly recommend also registering with GamStop, the free national self-exclusion scheme. GamStop applies your exclusion across all UK-licensed operators simultaneously, which removes the temptation to simply open an account elsewhere.

Self-assessment

Rizk includes a 14-question self-assessment test in your account. It takes a few minutes and is designed to help you identify patterns in your own gambling behaviour. It is not scored against a clinical threshold — it is a structured prompt to honest reflection.

Practical limits that work

Controls in an account are most useful when they are set before a problem starts, not after. A few habits that hold up in practice:

  • Set a deposit limit equal to your intended monthly entertainment budget before your first deposit, not after a big loss
  • Never gamble with money earmarked for rent, bills or savings — treat your account balance as the maximum you can afford to lose entirely
  • Use the Reality Check at 30-minute intervals if you tend to lose track of time
  • Take a Time Out immediately if you find yourself chasing a loss — re-opening the session the next day usually ends that impulse
  • Tell someone you trust what your limits are; external accountability is one of the most reliable checks

Where to get help in the UK

Every organisation below offers free, confidential support. You do not need to be in crisis to contact them — curiosity or mild concern is a perfectly good reason to call.

  • GamCare — National Gambling Helpline: 0808 8020 133 (free, 24/7). Counselling, online chat, and a forum.
  • BeGambleAware — information, self-help tools and referral to specialist treatment.
  • Gordon Moody — residential and online treatment for people whose gambling has caused serious harm.

Blocking software

Gamban blocks access to gambling sites and apps across all your devices in one step. BetBlocker is free and covers multiple platforms. Either tool works independently of your account settings — they operate at the device level, so they cannot be bypassed by logging into a different account.

Protecting minors

Access to this site is restricted to persons aged 18+. If your device is shared with anyone under 18, parental-control software adds a practical barrier that account settings alone cannot provide. Tools such as Net Nanny or Qustodio can block gambling-related content at the network level across every browser on the device.

If you have any concerns about a young person's access to gambling content, GamCare's helpline (0808 8020 133) can advise.

For any questions about your account's control settings, contact us at [email protected].

Gambling should be entertainment, not a chore.
